a 38B and a 40C have the same size cup mathematically. You'll find that the C on the 40 is just a touch wider is all. What you liked may have been the design of the 40C vs what you normally wear.
If you think of the bra size as two different measurements, band and cup, then what you've concluded is that you feel more comfortable in the larger cup but not the larger band.
try 38 (same band) C (larger cup)
alternatively, get measured. But get measured by a certified fitter and not a retail salesperson who isn't allowed to touch you (VS for example). You can't get a good measurement while trying to keep the tape off the body.

If you wore a 38B and you tried a 40C to get a comfortable fit you probably should try a 38C.
Go to VIctoria Secrets and let them measure your bra size.

Try both 38C and 36C and see which gives the best fit. Remember, the bra should fit comfortabley on the first hook.

I would try the 38C because that is your bust size. Even if your cup size changes, you bust line stays the same...i think. â¥
