The one that comes to most minds immediately is the anthropologist. Anthropology as a field covers a broad range though and some never leave town at all. As a group, people who do this are generally called Social Scientists.

A sociologist studies the effects of history, culture, psychology, geography, etc on society.
You could also refer to this person as a world traveler, or a student of human nature.
