I am a Brit living for over 2 years in Bulgaria and I find it a very difficult language to learn. However I get buy easily by pointing to an object that I want to buy etc. You will find that quite a lot of young people do speak a little English which they have learned at school. In the banks you will always find most of the staff speak English. If you have a problem just ask if they speak English and if they don't they will always point to a person that does.

No, it is not widely spoken. But most people know Yes, no, thank you, right, left etc. It is also almost always possible to find somebody to translate for you. Knowing German or Russian helps, as these are the other common foreign languages in this area. Have fun there!

I wouldn't say widely spoken, but a lot of people do know it. I have visited Eastern Europe quite often (Slovakia to be exact) and there definitely were a bunch of people who could speak to language quite well.

No, it's not so widely spoken, depends on the country too actually. Quite many young people speak it, though, not so many people over lets say 35. I have had problems in Poland, Slovakia, Czech, they are more likely to speak German there.

Yes, people do speak English in E. Europe. Mostly the younger generations - because - regardless of what anyone says, they do look up to Westerners and like to meet people from other countries.
