Do you agree? I feel he doesn't get the respect he deserves. In a league with few good SS's, he is among the elite in the league, both offensively and defensively.

He should steal more bases; classic case of "doesn't live up to full potential." Worry less about home runs and cut down on the strike out total. He could work more walks and get on base more. Speed is his asset and he doesn't use it enough.

In a league with few good SS? How about Rollins, Reyes, and Hanley Ramirez, just to start. They are all better than Renteria. I am not saying Renteria stinks, but he is the 4th best SS in the NL, and would be the 5th best if Nomar still played SS. Also, Furcal is not as powerful, but much superior defensively, so I would call that almost even with Edgar. Are you a Braves fan?

I think being on four teams in 12 years has hurt Renteria, in that he hasn't established himself in a single market long enough to build a big fan base.

He's not a big slugger, just a guy who knows how to hit and get on base. I'm surprised he hasn't won more than two Gold Gloves, and he's had a lot of postseason experience. So yes, he's definitely an undervalued player, at least in the eyes of the baseball public.

Being a Braves fan and watching Edgar for a while now, I would have to say that I underrated him before he came to Atlanta. Now seeing the way he plays the game, I think he should be mentioned among the best SS in the game. He's everything to the Braves that Jeter is to the Yankees.

Renteria didn't exactly impress me in Boston. He signed a rich contract, showed up out of shape, complained about the infield and didn't do much. When the Red Sox dumped him in a deal with Atlanta, Edgar suddenly got in shape and started playing well again. Wasn't $8 million a year (or whatever the exact number was) enough?

He is a little underrated. I don't think his fielding is all that but his hitting is good. People never forget the name Luis Gonzalez, Bill Mazerowski, but who was that guy that got the WS winning 2 out hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th in 1997? Indians fans and Marlins fans are probably the only ones who remember.

Defense has been spotty at times, he's not solid and moving from team to team may have an impact on his real baseball value but in so far as fantasy goes, yeah he's got some great numbers.

I agree with that because once he left various teams for whatever reason he just played and did his job. His overall play is what made him so intriguing by other teams and why he settled in in Atlanta.
