My brothers neigbours have recently built an extension to the front of their house. The problem is the bricks are a completely different colour to the rest of the house and its an eyesore. From my brother's lounge its all you can see. He doesn't want to speak to the man who lives there as he's not a friendly person. Is there anything he can do legitimately about this without revealing his identity. All his other neigbours feel the same but don't want to talk to the man. He lives in the uk. Any help would be appreciated.

If the extension required planning permission then it is highly likely that the council will have put a condition on the consent requiring that your neighbour submit a sample of the brick to be used prior to the commencement of works. However, if it is a porch extension then up to a certain size it would not require permission and if that is the case then nothing can be done. Check with the Council - start with the Enforcement Section of the Planning Department and ask them to investigate. Don't worry about complaining as the Council are required to keep your details confidential. If you get stuck and need professional help then get in touch via my web site below.

Contact the local Council planning office. If it was built without permission, there is a possibility that they can make him take it down. If he applied for permission, then in theory the council will have contacted you before permission was granted.

It sounds as though you have grounds for a complaint anyway if the extension is not in keeping with the character of the rest of the street.

In the States we have subdivision Covenants in which some go pretty far as to what a person can and can't do. Or possibly the city could do something for ya...

Better yet Get a bunch together and dress up like the Clan and go burn his house down. Oh, yea you said it was Brick.

So what's the hope here? That the guy will pull down the extension? Paint it? Think about some landscaping in the front garden that will obscure the eyesore and live and let live.

sometimes when a builder builds an extension the original bricks are no longer available ..and sometimes they then build with as good a match as possible ..and then sometimes they build with a total contrast ..it may not look good in your eyes but in theirs alls well ..you can hire a firm of brick tinctures ..and they will mach your bricks using a silicone dye ..unless you live in a conservation area and the council has not specified what bricks to use then there is little you can do about it

Depending on the size of the extention would mean he either needed planning permission or at least building control, normally local councils are hot on extentions and new buildings being in keeping with the surrounding area bust bet would be to contact building control and report it but then its pretty much up to them.

Contact the local planning officer and ask him to check that the extension meets the conditions of the planning application. If it does meet the conditions there is nothing more you can do. If not, formally ask the enforcing officer to take appropriate action.

He's kind of wanting to shut the door after the horse has bolted, he should have done something at the beginning of the build.
All he can really do is to check that they had the full and correct planning permission.
