Ska started in Jamaica sometime between 1958 and 1960.
It combined Jamaican mento with American Motown.
Ska music is defined (in my opinion) by its off-beat rhythm.
Rock music is played on the beat.
1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4..
Ska is played on the off-beat, like this:
..1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4
Since Jamaica was a part of the British Commonwealth, Ska soon found its way to England were it was often referred to as "blue beat". By 1965 though, Ska fell out of fashion and Reggae was the new sensation.
Ska resurfaced in England circa 1979 when The Specials added a bit of punk to traditional ska. And ska has existed ever since.
Like any genre, ska comes in many forms. There is traditional Jamaican ska, 2 Tone, ska-punk, Latin ska, and even ska-jazz. Ska is enjoyed around the world. You should give these bands a try.

The Specials are the Gods of Ska (2nd wave, but they expanded ska into the punk genre)
Now that you know that, here's other bands you should listen to:
Reel Big Fish
Streetlight Manifesto
The Aquabats
Big D and the Kids Table
Leftover Crack
Operation Ivy
Mustard Plug
The Slackers
The Toasters
Sublime (close enough)
Suicide Machines
Against All Authority

Ska music is a fun upbeat some what rebelious type of music that uses brass instruments like trumpets and tombones. The guitar has a repetative sound its kind of like party music. My favorite ska bands are Reel Big Fish and Catch 22 ohh and Charlie and The Trumpet Factory. Either band has the same sound. Thats I guess somewhat what ska is.
