He won't be breaking them............so not something we have to worry about.

Let us start with goals, and assume that Sidney plays as long as Gretzky (20 seasons)

Wayne Gretzky scored 894 goals over 20 seasons, an average of 45 goals a year
Through 2 seasons, Sidney Crosby has scored 75 goals, an average of 37.5 a year.
In order to break Gretzky's record, Sidney will have to average 45.5 goals a year over the next 18 years. Keep in mind, that scoring more than 40 goals after the age of 35 is very rare in the NHL. Crosby has his work cut out for him.

Wayne Gretzky had 1963 assists in 20 seasons, an average of 98 assists per season (Keep in mind that Bobby Orr, Mike Bossy, and Mario Lemieux are the only players in NHL history who have averaged 100 POINTS/season for their career...let alone 100 assists/yr)
Through 2 seasons, Crosby has had 147 assists, for an average of 73.5.
Crosby would need to average 100.9 assists a year to break Gretzky's record. Highly unlikely!

So far, Sidney Crosby's career has been a shadow of the careers of Gretzky and Lemieux, and I see nothing on the horizon that says Crosby will approach the career totals that either of these men.

Do the math people. Crosby has to have 20 seasons at roughly 150 per to break Gretzky's career points record. He's already off that by a long ways.

Considering how much money players get now compared to when Gretzky started...and considering how much bigger and stronger the players are, which usually leads to harder hitting and a higher chance of injury...I don't think Crosby gets there.

He strikes me as a smart kid and I could even see him pulling a Barry Sanders on the hockey world and walking away before most expect him to.

However...if he were to break them...then there is a severe difference in the style of play that the 1980s Oilers were part of compared to teams of the early 21st Century. Could take 20 years if he even gets there...

I personally don't think he'll break them. Come close? yes. Break them? no. I'll tell you why I think this. Crosby plays in a pretty tough division and risking injury. Gretzky didn't suffer many injuries throughout his career. Sure Crosby is great and all but the next great one? I really do not think so. But nevertheless I still like Crosby better than Gretzky.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Gretzky had 2,857 points in his 20 year career. He averaged over 140 points a season for Christ's sake, that's ridiculous and will never be matched. 92 goals in 81'-82, 215 points in 85'-86'. No one will ever even approach these numbers.

13 seasons? 15 seasons??!! You guys most not know what Gretzky's records actual are. Read above and do some math. 15 seasons would mean and average season of 190 points per season, not in this lifetime. Look, Sid the Kid is an incredible talent but no one, NO ONE, will ever touch Gretzky's records.

I don't think he will break more than a few of them. Maybe goals scored and possibly points scored because of the new "girlie" style of play, and the gradual phasing out of the goaltender.

Plus Gretzky was a once-in-a-century player surrounded by an extraordinary team in the Edmonton Oilers. If that team was playing today the records that he would attain would be much greater than the real one's.

I don't think he will. The league has changed too much. One day Crosby will realize that defense wins championships now, and not offensive flair. If he wants to win Cups, and he does, then that is going to hurt his numbers. It simply isn't the 1980s anymore, and it doesn't look like it ever will be. Gretzky was great, but he was a product of the times. Crosby is a product of his times, too. That means few records.

Unless the NHl goes back to the air hockey era, that's not happening at all for Sidney.

First of all, let's not put the cart before the horse here. Give him time to establish himself as a worthy contender for the crown, then we'll talk about him beating Greztky's records.
