(Joking) the potential is as limitless as the hand that holds it...
Actually, the legitimate uses for guns today are fairlly limited, as opposed to when the constitution was written. Ranchers and farmers still need them to keep predators away - a bb gun won't do it. Law enforcement needs an edge over criminals - and until we can guarantee (not just make illegal) guns aren't here at all, they need them to respond to our calls for protection. Originally, the right was given to us to keep the brits and the natives out of our homes forcibly, and to defend the homestead as we expanded. Obviously, that isn't the same anymore. The problem with disarming, as it were, is that it doesn't work for everyone, just people near other people. OH, there's sport, too - biathalon, skeet, blah blah. I assume you aren't in to that, but some are. I used to carry at an old job, moving deposits to banks in a bad metro area, but I don't carry or own anymore, and refuse to join any lobbying groups at all. I would have been AT LEAST beaten, if not killed, without it - but with the possibility of using it, I was left alone. This isn't an ideal solution or an ideal world, and for that, I'm truely sorry. I'm still all for individual rights.

One would have been great last night but the guy outside my windows left once I called the cops. I sure as hell hate to be home alone with my kids. Last night freaked me out bad. My husband just went to nights and now I think it was a really bad idea. Guns are great for going out and hunting, The gun range to teach your kids what a gun can do to a melon that is for sure. My parents taught me how to use a gun and I am grateful for that cause I learned the good and the bad of having a gun and what they can do and it scared me to touch one for a bit but after awhile I was ok with them and just used them out on the range.

Many valid points so far, and one still ignored.
The founding fathers of our country put great faith in the people, and a bit less in a strong government, especially at the federal level. The right to bear arms is a part of our system of checks and balances. An armed populace is a check against armed invasion and out of control internal government, police force, militia, etc.

Self-defense. About 60 million people in the US own over 200 million guns. If someone wanted to invade the US, he would have to think about that first.

Generally, they are good for making holes in things. That pretty much leaves a lot of possibility except that they are generally frowned upon for any purpose other than hunting, self-defense or target shooting.
Incidentally, suicide is the most selfish, cowardly and stupid act a human can perform. Your screen name is absurd.

well there intention is defense...that isn't what it's used for most of the times but that's what it is for...such as being in the miltary we are only suppose to use of weapons in defense not just random shooting...so really the potential lies in the hand of the user.
