Im telling you, there's two possibilities. Let us briefly examine both. The first although improbable at first glance, may be highly probable if you consider all the hype and the fact that true facts are often cleverly manipulated to sell movies and/or books. Take the Da Vinci Code for example. Is there gonna be an end to the countless books riding on dan brown's success. Truth is exploited so that the line between reality and myth is blurred. Therefore, one can safely conclude that there was in fact a predicted date, but movie producers deliberately changed the numbers to fit their agenda.
The second possibility would be that there was a flaw to the mathematical system/ calendar system of mayans. Notice the date.... 12/23/2012... what does this tell us? examine the numbers individually... it tells us that the mayans only counted from 0 to 3! hilarious yes, but they probably encountered some problem along the way and thought that this was the end!

The mathematics of the formula for their calender just happen to stop this day. There is marginal evidence at best that shows the Mayans believed the world would end on this day other than the calendar.
It would be like all modern humans disappearing in the 80's and some new race finding a bunch of old computers in the 90's and saying "Oh my god, the world is going to end a midnight Dec. 31, 1999 because their computers end at this time."
When in reality even modern humans only plan 10-15 years into the future.

I know the Mayan calendar ends at some point. Since then many people have suggested that the world will end on that date because of the astonishing accuracy of the calender. This has led some to the conclusion that there was no more left and the world must end. I think it's far more likely that it ends because they didn't calculate past that date before their culture was subverted and destroyed. After all, if they could see the future to that extent, why bother with a calender that went so far past their own destruction?

Well the Maya thought the World worked in different ages. This age will end in Dec 23 2012. But to believe it is stupid. If people all believe the world is going to end it will surely promote destruction

Most historians believe that the world is not going to end, and that the Mayan calender repeats like ours does. the world does not end on January first every year does it?

Their calendar is cyclical, similar to ours, but on a bigger scale. That day is the last day of the larger cycle, before it ends. Since the calendar ends, and it seems that there is nothing after that, then they assumed that the world ends.
Cheers!!

the mayans might have been a pretty civilaized culture for thier time but they didnt have the resources that we have today... therfore i doubt the world will come to an end that soon BUT everyone dose need to look out for global warming! GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL! the mayan theory is not(observe the use of the word "THEORY!")
