I have a social work background. I've been working with children at a runaway shelter for 2 years. I'm currently working on getting my Associates. What certifications do I need? What should I be majoring in? (I am currently going for psychology) Any advice?

Thanks!

Elementary school teachers need a broad, liberal arts, bachelor's degree education.

You need to find a four-year college or university that you'd like to attend and apply for their bachelor's degree program in elementary or early education. For the lower grades, your major in the bachelor's degree will be education or liberal arts.

They may require that you take a couple tests (PRAXIS) and they will definitely require you do a semester of student teaching. After you graduate with your bachelor's degree, you apply to the state you want to teach in for a teaching certificate or you go on to get a master's degree.

Teachers with a master's degree earn more than those with a bachelor's.
