Also, Avery was awarded 1.9 million. NYR offered 1.3 and he was seeking 2.6 so pretty close to an even split decision.

Well, Burke didn't play into Lowe's little game. Now Lowe is going to be stuck paying for Penner. Penner is good, when a team is already around him, but the Oilers are in a re-building mode and don't have much for Penner to play with. There best players are going to be on the top line, and Penner is not good enough to be playing there yet.
Smart on Burke, he's got some young talent he can give NHL experience now. Plus, three picks, which can be dangerous, because Edmonton is going to be not a strong team for two years, those picks could end up being some good talent. There is going to be some good drafts coming up again.

Imagine Bertuzzi on a line with Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
Bertuzzi is back everyone, he's gonna kick some ***.

I'm sorry, I don't believe any of this conspiracy salary war BS...save it please. The Ducks had 1.8 mil in cap free, Lowe could have merely offered him 3 mil for one year. Lowe had to actually want the guy to make such a big offer and try to intice him away. No I don't think he deserves the amount of money he is getting, but he made an offer the Ducks knew they wouldn't match...he wasn't attempting to bait them into matching it, THEY COULDN'T! They didn't have the cap space. For people who say he's not worth the money, you sure are upset about the loss and the so-called conspiracy, so pick a side. You should be happy, you lost a so-so player (in your opinions) and gained more space to pick up someone of equal or better value, AND you get 3 picks. So seriously just save the conspiracy talk for politics.

The Ducks would be stupid to match it. Penner's good, but he isn't worth all that money. The Oilers made a desperation move, and it might come back to haunt them.

That said, I'm sick of Duck fans whining about it, especially Brian Burke. What Lowe and the Oilers did is right there in the rules. They didn't do anything they were not allowed to do. Too bad for them it was not a good move in this particular case.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Lowe still have a few extra draft picks floating around, including Anaheim's 1st round in 2008, the Isles second round in 2008 and the Flyer's third round in 2008. I don't think Lowe was as screwed up as some people think. It's a fend for yourself existance as an NHL GM and Lowe is doing what he feels is right for his club. Screw niceties or convention. Only time can tell if his move was stupid or a masterstroke.

They shouldn't match. let him go and let the oils see the mistake they just made. Penner is a decent player, but not great and certainly not worth as much as Lowe is offering.

Avery... It's one year deal, I don't anticipate him sticking around. A lot of teams would be glad to have him, even with him being a detriment... so he's an asshole off the ice, on the ice he can produce. the salary is pretty good though, but free agency will be good for him.

Looks like the Oilers will their version of a younger Todd Bertuzzi. Mark my words when I say this: Penner is at the same stage in his career as Bertuzzi was when he was with the Islanders. Will Penner be the same player down the road? As long as he doesn't pummell role players to the ice like the aforementioned Bertuzzi, then he will be okay.

Yup, he's an Oiler. Edmonton's out of their minds for causing so much trouble and fueling the salary wars. I don't have any problem with them making good offers to guys, but they're slitting their own throats along with the throats of other small-market teams. And woohoo for Avery maybe now he can get some plastic surgery to fix that face...sorry but no love lost on the guy.
