Do they make them the new "beast of the east"?
Great young offensive talent, solid pitching.

Yes. If I were New York, I'd be scared to death because Atlanta knows how to get it done. They owned that division for so long. They know how to get it back, and with the acquisitions that they've got, and with Philly surging, New York had better do something or they'll be on the outside looking in.

No. The Braves got a good player in Teixiera (sp?), but Dotel is often on the DL. He can only pitch like 2 days a week or else he gets hurt. Unless AJones really picks up his play, the Braves are a 2nd place team this year with no Wild Card (the WC will come from the West in ARI, LAD, or SD). The Mets 1-4 rotation are probably the best in the NL (Perez, Maine, Glavine, Hernandez). Only the Padres can come close because they have the top 2 SP period (Young and Peavy). The Mets offense has stunk this year and they are still in 1st. They went like 8-19 in June and they still were not caught. One hitter and one RP will not put a team over the hump 9 times out of 10.

The moves definitely help, but I was hoping they'd also pick up another starting pitcher. As long as Smoltz's shoulder doesn't act up, he, Hudson, and Chuck James give the Braves a very good first 3, but then after that, it's a bit iffy. Buddy Carlyse has been okay so far, but I'm not sure I'd trust him in a Game 4 of a series.

But yeah, Teixeira, Dotel, and Mahay will definitely help. Teixeira is the kind of hitter the Braves desperately needed, someone patient enough to not always swing away for home runs, unlike Andruw Jones. He'll take pressure off of Andruw and also get him better pitches to hit. And Dotel and Mahay will be huge for a tired bullpen.

A healthy Braves team will be hard to beat. Renteria needs to return, Chipper wrists can't be sore, Andruw needs more H, less K, Wickman remains good. Dotel was excellent for KC when Soria was hurt; he's a huge plus. Gaping hole at 1B is filled, depth at C behind McCann if he goes down again. Braves fans have to like their chances now.

"Beast of the east"
No...
Solid young pitching? Where is that?
Dotel gets hurt, Mike Gonzalez is hurting, Smoltz has problems... the back end of their rotation is VERY iffy...
Tex is coming to a tougher pitching league, he only has what...15 or so dingers ...
He is weaker from one side of the plate, and the NL pitchers- once they learn his tendencies- will cool down his hot start ( 2 homers, a few rbi's right?).

The Phils could easily make a run.
The Mets are holding on without Pedro, and Sanchez... once they come back, then we can talk.

With this new acquisition of Teixieria the Braves are deinately a humungous threat. There whole team is a threat coming up to the plate, Mccann, Teixiera, Renteria, Chipper, Francoeur, Andruw jones, and more.. I am a phillies fan and I am definately sweating them more now them and the mets are big competition.

yes...

The Philles will Phold without a bullpen and a closer. They are also shaky behind the plate and at third.

the Mets are hurting right now with beltran out, reyes in a funk and LoDuca hurting...If reyes plays great and Pedro comes back "lights out" they may have some punch to challenge.

Atlanta is solid top-bottom if Johnson keeps hitting at 2B, Chipper and Smoltz stay healthy and Hudson keeps pitching out of his A$$. I think they are the team to beat.

I don't know about the "beast of the east" because they still have the Mets and Phillies to deal with, but I do believe they have made themselves a legitimate contender.

Not only that, but here's some more logic for ya. They won't want to deal with Scott Boras for Andruw and Teixeira, so they can let Andruw go (sad as I will be to see it) and use some of that $$ for another quality starter (Santana, anybody? -- or is he a Boras client also?). Hmmm . . . would anybody in MN be sad to see Andruw in LF, or even DH? I'm sure we've got a decent CF down on the farm someplace, right? Maybe a more typical CF -- .300, 40 SB, good on-base% -- would be nice.
We'll see . . .
