Especially when the man has a PROVEN track record of success after 40 years in the music industry: 17 top 40 hits, 19 million records sold, packed out concerts internationally, Grammy Award and other accolades. He walked back into the same role he left 23 years ago on a top rated soap, causing the ratings to spike upward...has women fans all over the world ranging from their 20s to their 60s, some of whom STILL get into catfights over him at concerts...AND through it all, he has managed to stay happily married to the same woman for over 20 years and raise two sons?

Rick is probably one of the hardest working people in show biz, yet, the media still badmouths him and makes jokes about him every chance they get. I hate RS "haters"...grrr!

So.... anyone else out there wanting to give Rick some love? right here? right now? thanks....

Allow me to quote the editorial column from the December 1982 issue of International Musician and Recording World magazine (which featured a photo of Rick Springfield on the cover, with the caption, "What is this man doing in this magazine?"):

"We knew what we were doing all along when we decided to put Mr. Rick on the cover. We think he's gotten a bum rap all along. In America, there's a myth of long-standing that says a pretty face may never be accompanied by an abundance of talent. This useful lie is most likely perpetrated by untalented, ugly people - still, it has gradually become accepted as the wisdom of the ages. In typical 'A Star Is Born' fashion, the Rick Springfield persona has been carefully shaped and molded by press agents and publicity hype artists, to the point that most of the people who buy his records probably couldn't care less whether he can play or not. In this month's cover story, we determine that: a. He really can play (even if we're not crazy about his music) and b. He's not such a bad guy after all."

So the question of Rick Springfield's bad press goes back at least as far as one thoughtful magazine editor in 1982. I think it actually goes back even further, to the unfortunate episode regarding RS's first American single "Speak To The Sky" in 1972; for those who are unfamiliar with the incident, after the single rose to #14 on the Billboard pop chart, a (FALSE) rumor began circulating that Capitol Records was artificially inflating sales of STTS by bussing young girls to various record stores to buy the single. Radio DJ's began to refuse to play the record; by the time the rumor was finally proven false, the single had plummetted off the charts, and the damage to Rick Springfield's career (which ultimately proved to be permanent) was done.

Fast forward 9 years later - some deejays still refused to play Rick Springfield songs on their radio shows, citing RS's role on General Hospital, but I believe the real problem was the old STTS scandal still lingering in radio's collective memory. Here's this absurdly good-looking guy, now he's some soap opera actor, how can he be a real musician? And sadly, the only audience that DID give the guy a fair listen, and DID take RS's musicianship seriously was about 80% female and probably 70% of THOSE listeners were under the age of 18 at the time. Not a demographic generally considered to be discriminating in their musical tastes.

And the media (particularly rock music critics) have memories of elephantine proportions. Therein lies the problem, IMO. It's not fair, it's not right, but there it is - which is why I think it is that RS is so appreciative of the audience he DOES have.

In 1974, Springfield dated and lived with then 15-year-old actress Linda Blair. He considered it his first "grown up" relationship, despite nearly 10 years difference in their ages.[7][8]

He has been married to Barbara Porter since October 27, 1984. They met in 1980 while she was working as a receptionist at the recording studio where he recorded his 1981 album Working Class Dog. They have two sons: Liam, born in 1985, and Josh, born in 1989.

In 1985, Springfield took break from his musical career to spend more time with his family, and to deal with the depression that had affected him since his adolescence.[2] He had also wrestled with depression in the 1970s, when the serious illness of his father (who died on April 24, 1981) and career troubles caused him to "hit the wall" and contemplate suicide.[1]

In September 2000, Springfield was arrested for alleged spousal abuse. He spent one evening in jail and was released the next morning on $50,000 bail. He was never convicted, and charges were dropped.[3] Later, Springfield and his wife issued a joint statement to the press saying that they are happily married and will continue to raise their children together.[9]

In 2006, after nearly 34 years of residing in the United States, Springfield became an American citizen. He also still retains Australian citizenship.

He's alright. I used to have a crush on him back in high school and finally saw him in concert last year. He put on a good one although it was more mellow than I am used to.

After the concert he had less than 20 people waiting for him to get an autograph. He saw only 13. The line went on for only 20 minutes and he refused to see any one else...so am I still annoyed? Yes, lol.

I'm with ya, sister! It drives me nuts that he's put down so much, and it's always by people who think the only song he did was JG... they have no idea about all of the awesome stuff he's written, and won't even give him a chance.

He deserves respect. I still listen to and love his music. Maybe it is just jealousy on the part of the media because he isn't giving them the "dirt" they love to report on.
