I've heard members in the Taliban had been arguing as to what they want (money, militants, South Korea pulled out, etc.), but don't they want militants now? Who is holding the militants? I wasn't aware that the South Koreans were holding hostages...
The South Korean government has asked for US help recently.. How is the US going to help?
Why wasn't the US helping before? Personally, I think the US sometimes tries to become involved in a lot of things, thinking that we are helping others countries and liberating the world, but 23 lives (now 21) are at stake, and I felt like the US had the power to help the South Korean government before...
Also, it wasn't a big part of the news..I knew that the US was trying not to become involved... what do you think about the media not shedding light onto this tragedy? (I know they did to some extent, but to me, it didn't seem like a big deal..Like it was kind of a small story and no one really knew about it or cared)

Here's the deal:
1. The South Koreans are superstitious Christians who thought they would display their love for humanity by going to one of the most dangerous places in the world to try to assist.
2. The USA has basically occupied Afghanistan. As such, Karzai, the Afghan president,is at the command of the USA.
3. The USA ultimately controls the prisons that house Taliban and terrorist prisoners.
4. The superstitious Taliban hostage takers do not care about killing anyone because the "believers" will go to heaven. The rest? Allah will do as he wishes with them.
5. Most countries do not openly respond to kidnapping demands because it may result in encouraging more kidnappings to get what they want.
6. South Korea knows the USA has the power to help. It probably is trying but behind the scenes.
7. Best guess here is that this will end in violence with an attempted rescue.

Ignoramus has an excellent answer.
This situation has been created by South Korean Christians going into another country where they are not wanted. Their purpose was to proselytize.
The USA is against trading Taliban Prisoners for Hostages.
