Generally speaking, I think Americans are kind and generous. That's not to say there aren't a lot of brash, conceited and self-centered people out there. But it isn't limited to any one nationality.

No; those sorts of behavior have no international boundaries; I have associated (mostly in work situations but also in public and through social contact with many) closely with Italians, Greeks, Turks, Brits, Indians, Pakistanis, Germans, Mexicans and French and have seen these types as often as they occur in American populations.

Yes there are quite a few of those people, but they are easy to avoid. I would say that the majority of my friends are pretty down to earth, but it seems the older people get, the more conceited they become.

I would say absolutely untrue. Maybe those you work and socialize with base their opinions of Americans on you.
Even if you are well like socially you, as an American, must factor into their overall opinion of Americans in general. I think if you did a better job representing us then they might have a higher opinion of us.

at times, sure. But isn't it that way with people everywhere?
I think it has a lot to do with not thinking before acting. If people really saw how they sometimes came across as to others, they may rethink the way they behave.

I live in Europe part-time. I see the same attitude of being loud and pushy with the English, Germans and many others. It is not just Americans.
I live in Eastern Europe and I believe the bad attitude is because the country I am in is sort of poor and the visitors come from a richer country. Their big shot ego gets in the way.(I am an American who is often embarrased by my coutrymen.)
