The cold front is denser than the air it is moving into which forces the air it is moving into above it. Cold fronts are steep and for that reason can better force air upwards. This air that is being forced can sometimes have enough instability to rise until it condenses and can precipitate. Cold fronts can be responsible for widespread severe weather and tornado outbreaks, usually in the form of a line of storms.

Along a cold front, colder airmass actively displaces the warmer air at the surface. The vertical motion at the cold front will be very vigorous and the instability will be more resulting in the formation of clouds. The faster the front, the greater will be the conditional instability of the uplifted warm air. When the cold front arrives, there will a decrease of temperature and dewpoint and an increase in the pressure. There will be a wind shift of 45 to 180 degrees.Heavy rain or snow, frequent thunderstorms, severe turbulance and line-squalls will occur.Cold fronts have a slope of 1/40 to 1/80 which is the reason for the strong vertical motion leading to the formation of clouds resulting in the precipitation.
