I agree with answerer 2, Inbeem. It makes us feel good. This sounds good, but it isn't. The way we treat others, compassion, love, justice, etc. should not depend on the way we feel.
We've been trained by society since we were infants that when we do good, we get praised and when we do wrong, we get punished. We come to love praise and avoid punishment and that, my friend, is the basis for all our goodness. Not very noble.

What is good? Is it good to kill someone in defense of your own people? Your people would call you good for saving their life but the other people would call you bad for killing them. Is the saving of the one life good? Is it bad to eat more than you need to live? Is it good to eat more than you need to live if doing so will honor the cook? The idea of good is cultural and cannot be clearly defined without that culture. Religion is the reason for ideas of good and evil. All law and social order comes from religious thought. The idea of 'inspiration' comes from religious thought as well which supposes that there is a 'force' or intelligence outside of the natural universe that can help you get what you want.
Nothing inspires me to do good as good is a religious construct and unnecessary for real life and there is nothing outside of me creating 'inspiration'. If a person asks me for a drink of water I give them a drink of water. If a person slaps me I may slap them back.

My son really inspires me to be the best me that I can be. I want him to grow up knowing that I am a good person, and that I am someone to emulate. I want him to find inspiration in the things i have done with my own life, and to truly believe that whatever he wants is out there, he only needs to reach for it.

What inspires me to do good is the positive feelings I get as a result. My lifelong bout of low self esteem requires that I seek approval from everyone I encounter, and helping others improves my karma, and maintains my sense of self worth.

I do not know. I really don't. I was just talking about this with a great friend yesterday. I cannot watch shows like Springer and Cheaters. I do not like to see people hurt and I have even broken up fights and risked my own safety to help others. I believe in Jesus but do not really believe in a heaven. I think when I die, I die. If I do good it is not for anything, I just have to, it is in my nature for some reason.

It is a really selfish reason, but the it makes my heart feel good to help someone else. Even if it is as simple as holding a door for someone or changing a flat for a stranger. It makes me feel good.
