The answer is actually in the middle. Regulated Capitalism benefits all in a society, laissez faire Capitalism however leads to oligarchy.

Even Adam Smith, who wrote the Wealth of Nations that created the movement towards Capitalism in our world believe that capitalism created oppression and needed to be regulated to some extent by the government. So it's a pretty valid belief. As far as big government creating prosperity.. maybe they are just taking the idea of some regulation to the extreme... I honestly don't have an answer for you on that one.

Because they have not been poor without a job. I was on welfare but was able to get good jobs and provide for my family thanks to capitalism. Yet few people care for the poor and government is the enemy of the needy. Government gives small handouts to the poor and puts big regulations and taxes on the backs of business so they cannot afford to employ people like me. The well off think government rule is great but they don't need a job like I do.

Capitalism doesn't.. Unless, it's allowed to become a monopoly. More so than anything, I believe that's what the biggest gripe is about 'capitalism' today. Big government creates laziness and oppression as does government dependency.

Because capitalism generally does not help the poor or middle class that much. The Dow at 14000 does nothing for the workers that cannot afford to buy stock. They don't understand how tax breaks to corporations are helping them while they struggle to fill their gas tanks and go to work. Do you work for minimum wage? If you did then your understanding may be better.

Because the government controls most of the schools and the media, probably.
1920s, you mean the immediate consequence of our new taxation and big government system that was created in the 1910s? Better go double-check that history book - read the section on 1913-1917 that they probably didn't cover very well in school.
