I took my car into an auto body shop, to get the bumper and tail light fixed, because I was in a car accident (which wasn't my fault). This shop was recommended by two of my friends, one who used to work there, so I was expecting them to do a really great job. I got home yesterday, and took a look at my car, and noticed that 1) the paint looks darker 2) the turn signal doesn't work and 3) my front head light is yellow. I called the shop, and the manager said that he would be more then happy to fix the paint and fix the turn signal, but that they did not touch the front at all. My car is an 03, and I know for a fact that the head light was not yellow when I dropped it off, because the other one is perfectly clear. They detailed my car, so I'm thinking that someone may have sprayed a chemical on it, or even worse... that someone switched it out. What should I do? Any advice?

Thank you all for your suggesstions. I am going to call and ask to speak with the owner in a little while. Hopefully he will be willing to work with me on this issue as well as fix the work that was already done. My mom suggested that I threaten to post an article in the local newspaper, or contact the better business bureau and file a complaint, if they don't offer to fix it. I guess in the end, if they don't, then I know to never go there again, not suggest them to ANYONE, and tell both of my friends to STOP recommending them as well.

sounds like they are willing to work with you on it, so give em a chance to fix things. Also, if it is being done thru insurance, the insurance can get involved and refuse to accept the repairs until they are done right. As for the front light, If all the damage was to the rear, why would they have touched the light? maybe a dishonest employee swiped yours and put in a different one, but I doubt it. Could be your's just yellowed for some reason. Maybe it can be cleaned, if not, just throw in a new one and write it off to a life experience. Ohterwise, you'll have to battle it out.

You would know what the headlight looked like when you took the car in for the repair. If it is not the same as when you picked it up then the shop should be responsible. Go through the small claims court and sue the guy. The worst that can happen is you lose the case and will have to pay the court costs which aren't much. I would suggest that you get a lawyer. The last time I went to court, it was filled with lawyers, and the court was set up to avoid the lawyers, but they have taken over. It would help your case, I know from experience.

Yellowing of headlights is something that can happen to any vehicle. Just because one headlight doesn't have the problem doesn't mean the other didn't before you took it to the body shop doesn't mean the problem happened at the shop. That is some really daft logic really but you state that as some sort of fact proving they messed with it but it is no such thing. Because the damage to the vehicle was at the rear I can see no logical reason why they would do anything to the front, nor as someone working in the auto repair industry can I think of anything in my wildest imagination that they could do to cause one headlight - ten feet away from where they are working - to yellow.

What we have here is a classic case of someone going over their vehicle with a fine-tooth comb after taking it in for repairs and finding all sorts of pre-existing conditions that they never noticed before (because they never looked) so they can blame it on someone else. It happens daily in the repair industry.

Spend a few dollars and get a chemical analysis on the lense to prove your theory or take a deep breath and try your best to enjoy the rest of your life.
