But they KNOW about the variables! That should enable them to couch their language in careful terms, such as, "given a constant wind speed of...." or, "assuming the Jet Stream is not knocked off course..." and so on. But they just come across as so glib.... so assured! In Britain, we have the Michael Fish joke, remember?

Aw, Sasi, where's your sense of fun gone? Moaning about the weather and how the BBC keep getting it wrong is a national past-time. (I only mention the BBC because I categorically refuse to watch commercial TV channels because I can't stand all the advertisements - so please don't think I'm picking on the Beeb - our beloved national institution).

I've noticed a recent worrying trend though. For about 4 weeks the BBC forecast maps have been showing rain clouds over Cumbria EVERY SINGLE DAY. I think they're just hedging their bets. They've been right 90% - pretty impressive, don't you think?

Anyway, the solution is simple: work on the premise that it is going to be cold, wet and windy so that if the sun shines, the temperature rises and the wind drops you will be ecstatically, deliriously HAPPY! And if you're constantly worrying about when on earth you're going to hang your washing out to dry and should you plan to do laundry tomorrow - do as I did and invest in a tumble drier. Costs money, isn't good for the environment but at least you can get on with your life!

So, as the rain clouds roll in from the west (yet again), take a tip from me and get your washing out tomorrow, Saturday, because it's going to rain on Sunday (not that you would dream of doing laundry on the Lord's Day, of course). LOL!

Of course not, how can you predict something with so many variables, such as wind speed and temperature, weather prediction models are getting better but surely it will always be a forcast, not an absolute certainty, i use Metcheck which i find on the whole to be good and easy to use

If that was so to many would not get paid. Go back a couple of decades and none of would have been paid they were very inaccurate.
When I was a kid I would tell my mom it was going to rain and she insisted at me it would not; because the weatherman said 0%. And rain it did. I did that a few times and she decided to stop believing them and lisen to me.

I get your point. How many times has one stated rain and we get nothun but sun.

or you watch 3 different forecasts and they are all different.

But I hear it is really hard to figure out, there are a lot of calculations and checking past figures, etc.

That is a terrible idea. Go here and you will see an example of what they do to determine every forecast.

There are so many variables to affect the weather that it is almost impossible to always get it right.

hmmm. The Met Office pays them and its their information that they give for the forecasts.

Most people relaise that it's not an exact science and that it's impossible to truly know.

You either use it as a guide, but if you insist on it being gospel, then they would just not bother.
