I recently moved and had to get a new job due to the location. I have been here for four months and absolutely hate it. I don't fit well into the position I was hired for based on my background and experience. I can do the job because its easy, but I find myself bored to tears even after prodding all my coworkers for additional work. I am considering looking for another job, but I know there are other positions within this company that I would be a better for in.
Should I consider trying to switch departments after only four months or instead search for another job completely?
If you think I could switch departments, how should I approach my boss about it? Should I just be blatantly honest?
Please help.

I would approach the boss and say that your current position is not challenging enough for you. Bring up the fact that there is not enough work for the pace you keep. Mention that you are happy but you may be able to benefit the company more by transferring to a department that is better suited to you.

I think you should be glad you have a job to go to. EVERY job has "boring" moments. I LOVE those. I can do absolutely anything I want. You need to learn how to deal with the bordem & collect your pay check. Jobs aren't going to be exciting. I hate to say this but this has been my experience. YOu will ALWAYS have someone in the office or at the job who hates you & works to bring you down. Or you have people who tell you other people think you're a slave. My view is that anytime you're working for "the man" or someone other than yourself you're going to have difficulties. A mature person realizes this and finds a way to work around it.

I would LOVE if my employment were enjoyable. It's not. I need the paycheck right now more than I need to try & find something that's dynamic or exciting or fullfilling.

Just looking around for a new job won't do you any harm. On the other hand you may find a very good one. It is clear from what you have written that you need a change, either within your company, or somewhere else.
