Dont stress out! It is normal to forget sometimes and leave it in that long. In fact, I purposely leave a tampon in all night in the beginning when Im at my heaviest.
I found this paragraph on the website link below:
What are its symptoms?
Symptoms of TSS occur suddenly, usually during or just after a menstrual period. The more common symptoms include a high fever (over 102° F.), vomiting, diarrhea, a sunburn-like rash, and drop in blood pressure. Muscular aches and pains, headaches, sore throat, blood shot eyes, confusion, and peeling of the skin on the palms and soles may also appear. These symptoms are important and require prompt medical attention.
It sounds like you just have a shifty period schedule (the 4 to 5 days)....by the way be THANKFUL for that, and you are sick with some kind of cold or virus.
There is nothing wrong with going to your doctor just to be sure if it will make you feel better. And he/she might be able to comfort you about your tampon habits and what you should worry about doing and not doing.
Relax and get better!

well i wanted to check TSS for u , there is info about it in o.b. tampon packs, but i didnt find the paper, so i suggest u to check TSS on the web. i remember once i read, but as i read ur "symptomes" nothing sounded familiar to me about it. and i didnt get why u were worried...u can sleep with a tampon, no need to change it during the night, becouse when u r lying u r bleeding less. nothing happens if u have it there alll night long. and about how come now ur periods r shorter...i dont know, but i would be very happy. i also bleed for six to seven days but i remember when i first used tampons i only bleeded for five days. but then it went back to normal. so check TSS on the web, and if u think u may be right, then go to the doctors at once, it may cause death if i remember well.

The most common symptoms of TSS are severe headache and a high fever. You most likely have a simple cold but you might want to do to the doctor just in case.

well TSS is usually not seen unless the tampon is left in for Days! gross but true. I feel you may be gettig sick but I doubt it is TSS. If your peroid smells feculent then go to the ER. Keep an eye on yourself and if symptoms progress go to the doctor. In the meantime drink lots of water and rest

I've done that a whole bunch of times, its not good for you, but I'd bet you are fine. Your symptoms don't match TSS. If you had severe dizzy spells and lots of others. This web site tells you when to get help

Sounds like you're getting a cold.
If you start running a high fever and develop a rash, then I would worry about TSS.

It doesn't sound like TSS, it sounds like a cold. You could go to your doctor and check it out. However, for more info you should look here:http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2000/200_tss.html
Good Luck

you don't have TSS. If you had TSS, you would have an extremely high fever! TSS is an acute disease, it wouldn't span over months.
a shorter period is a good period.
maybe you have some other ailment that is causing your symptoms.

That's not TSS. You probably just have a cold.
Periods often get shorter once your cycle normalizes.
You'll be fine. Just don't do it again.
