Is there any limitation paying somebody or some institution by check, specially when you have checking account? Like, if you have $5000 in your account, can you write a check of $2000 to anyone?

1. You can write a check for any amount.
2. You shouldn't write checks for more than the amount of the free and clear balance in your account. In other words, if you have $2000 in your account, and then you deposit a check for $50,000, you need to wait until that $50,000 check clears before you can write a big check. Different banks have different rules on how long it takes for a deposited check to be free and clear for your use.

There is no inherent limitation to the amount when paying by check.

The limitation is usually from the person or institution accepting the check. If it represents a lot of risk for them they might ask for a certified check which is a special kind of check that guarantees the money is available in the account.

Hope that helped!

You can basically write a check for any amount provided there are enough funds to cover them. I would suggest that if they are over a few thousand dollars that you go to your bank and get a certified check. These checks are a guarantee that the check is good because the money is taken out of the account at the time the check is issued.

I have seen these checks written for tens of millions of dollars.

As long as the funds are available you can write a check for whatever amount you would like. I work in a back and have seen some rather large amount personal checks come through. You can also purchase a cashiers check for larger amounts and depending on who you are writing the check too they might appreciate that more instead of a personal one.

the amount is only limited by the amount of funds you have in your checking account.. of course you do have a lot of folks your write checks for amounts even higher than that.
