I have to say that overall I am a mixture of the two. Actually I am more pathetic than sympathetic... and I am very sympathetic so that must mean I am truly pathetic.

I am sympathetic to others and even empathetic. I probably have have had my pathetic moments; and I know I have come across some pathetic people!

they are all from Greek: Sympathetic - from syn- "jointly" + pathos "feeling" Empathetic - from en- "in" + pathos "feeling" Pathetic - from pathetikos "comfortable, able to emotion," finally morphed into colloquial which potential, "so depressing as to be ridiculous."
