There were people with the technology to accomplish a circumnavigation 20,000 years ago. My bet is that it was accomplished a number of times, there are just no surviving records.
Magellan' expedition made it all the way around the earth in 1519-1522. Magellan didn't, he died in the Philippines. The leader of the 18 survivors who completed the voyage was Juan Sebastian Del Cano.
Joshua Slocum was the first recorded solo circumnavigator, 1895-1898.
Yuri Gagarin was the first to complete an orbit in space, April 12 1961.
