Prime means that it needs water in the pump to work properly. If it is not primed it will not draw in any water and just keep pumping air.

Two possible answers. There is a bad seal and air is entering the pump prohibiting the pump from priming or you need a check valve to keep water in the pump when it is turned off. Most pumps for this purpose are not self-priming.

Pool pumps must have water from the suction point all the way to the pump. They are not self priming. If you loose the water in the line when the pump is shut off (it flows back to the reservoir), you'll have to install a one way check valve.

its means you might have a dead koi fish clogging the line somewhere! HAHA!

Actually, if your pump wont prime...it usually means there is a clog.

Undo the screws of the base of the pump(where the water bubbles up) ...reach in and pull out the clog from the impellor. Screw them back on and BOOM! You should be done.

Make sure the power is off.
