Probably faster means of transportation lead to a massive rise in consumerism in the U.S.
Basically, the U.S. is a completely unsustainable nation. We have these elevated standards of living that are at the expense of other people in different parts of the world. We can buy cheap products because of the massive poverty in Asia, we get cheap food because of poverty in Central/South America, etc.

NAFTA, CAFTA, The WTO. These agreements and organizations take advantage of the huge disparity between 1st and 3rd world nations. Under the guise of helping third world economies, they allow them to be exploited by corporate America for their cheap infrastructure and labor.
