I am 18 and have 2 younger brothers. My mom and dad are divorced and my mom has custody, but my brothers are living with our grandma and not her. I need to be able to sign papers for them such as enrolling them into school. We live in florida and I am wanting to know how I should go about becoming a legal guardian to them. I do not want custody, I just want to be able to sign legal papers for them. How can I do this?

There are provisions in Fla. law for temporary guardianships by family members with the consent of both parents. But there has to be a reason for it. Why can't your mother or grandmother sign any necessary papers?

call the clerk of the court in the county that they live in. Ask them how you can apply to be appointed guardian of their person and/or property.

they will tell you what forms you need, how must it costs (usually not very expensive) and what other documents you may need.

they may only permit you to be guardian of their person will would permit you to sign school papers, make medical decisions, etc. To be guardian of their property would be for the court to assign you the ability to handle financial affairs on their behalf as well.

if i were you, i would try for both - just in case. You don't have to use it as long as Grandma is doing okay, but in the case of her illness or death, these papers would be already in place to care for your brothers.

sorry i can't give you specifics, but I live in NC
