I believe just the opposite.
Because they cannot talk a caring owner has to learn and closely watch a pets body language to know what the needs and feelings of the pet might be.
In human relationships I think we neglect to do that because of familiarity, and miss a lot of valuable information which could help in a relationship.
Possibly, it isn't what you actually say that is important but what you feel.

Nah, it requires a close relationship with your animal, watch their body language and get to know them, that allows a good relationship.

Did you ever think about how dogs learn commands, and get an idea of what you want them to do based on your motions or words??? We'd have the best possible relationship if we learned to do the same for our animals.

If... yes, it is if and but that is the cause of most problems on Mother Earth! If we are ignorant... we think others also to be ignorant! If we lack intelligence... we think all people on Mother Earth are born fools! We fail to realize that every human being... nay every living being has limitations! To think animals can talk or could talk is meaningless!

Human being is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle. Every human being has already manifested each and every form of animal kingdom barring none! We have been a lion, a goat, a cobra, cat, fish and what not in one of our earlier manifestations as an animal! We reached the human form only after crossing a chain of 7.3 million manifestations!

In the cosmic life cycle... our soul atman initially manifests the form of an amoeba (single cell formation)... the first manifestation in the cosmic life cycle! It further evolves into multi-cell formation, then insect life, plant life, animal life and finally the form of a human being! The question of lower forms contacting us does not arise.

You do not mean to say a toddler three-month-old is competent enough to interact with a grown-up! As a toddler grows initially into a boy, a grown-up gentleman and finally a bearded man... in the cosmic life cycle also our soul atman initially manifests the form of insect, plant and animal life. Only as a human being one gains enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha)!

The total life span of a soul atman is limited by 8.4 million manifestations! Within this period... a manifest journey of 96.4 million earthly years... our soul atman must reach the stage of enlightenment and finally salvation! In the human form alone we have 1.1 million manifestations. The initial 7.3 million manifestations are lived up to the animal form! We can't even understand each other. Leave the animals alone...we're already destroying their world and their numbers. Makes me wonder why dogs are so loyal. They should be eating the babies like male grizzlies! Thank God for mothers. Even the female dogs like the sweet one who had a nervous breakdown because those damned grownups couldn't handle the job without her but never gave her a fair chance to complete the job herself..They sent us away and she never saw us again. That was the beginning of my journey through Hell and the end of her duties. I know how she felt. Dumb dog? Yeah...her name was Sandy. And her children were sent to the orphans home in Bath, right there on the Kennebec River.

Just because you cannot understand what they are saying, it doesn't mean that they aren't talking. Those that I have observed who do understand them generally have better relationships with animals. But it does bear mentioning that some animals - just like people - are complete jerks.

We'd have a better relationship with them for about five minutes until the novelty wore off. Then we'd begin to lie to them, steal from them, enslave them, commit mass genocide on them, and just generally abuse and subjugate them like we do to all of the other humans on the planet. Right now, they should be happy to simply be served up on a platter for dinner. The ability to talk would just complicate things for them beyond their current deplorable state of exploitation.

theres an old Ojibwa(?) story. dogs used to be able to speak and understand human languages. one day they all got tired of all the errands people were making them do. they decided to pretend they could no longer understand, or speak human languages. eventually, they did lose the ability to speak. / as one answerer says, if animals could speak our language(s), we would probably just end up arguing all the time. my dog speaks volumes with his eyes.

My Mother used to say that if Monkeys could talk, they would have to do a day's work like the rest of us.

No. Our relationship would be the same as what we currently suffer with humans, that's why we love pets, because they cannot talk.

My cat Rascal does not need to talk, he wants ham out of the fridge, he just sits at fridge door, wants outside, same thing, wants me to pet him, cuddles up beside me, he does not need to talk as such he has me all figured out, and it works every time.lol
