Theatre is a great training ground and as someone who is new you need good training. To jump into tv and film auditions without any performance background would be killing your career before it even gets started. Some Casting Directors may refuse to see you again if you make a mockery of their process by being unprepared and ignorant the first time you walk through the door. You need to learn what you're doing. Learn to express yourself on stage, take acting classes, voice lessons and dance classes. Then try your hand at some student films and maybe some independants before you go for getting an agent to go on bigger auditions.

Try these sites:
www.backstage.com - do a casting search
www.actorsaccess.com - set up a free account then click on breakdowns

good luck

Do you have a drama program at your school? That's a good place to start. Other than that look at your local community theatre's for opportunites to do some shows. Also, check out some drama schools (not John Robert Powers, actual schools). In DC, a lot of the bigger theatres offer classes taught by members of their company and they're a wonderful way to get some training by working professionals. Many of these places also have kids or teens classes and summer programs. Look around an see if there's anything similiar in your town.
You become a better actress by getting good training and mostly, by experience! If you're in Indiana, forget film and tv right now, concentrate on theater. This is where, as a actor, you can really hone your craft anyways - on a stage, not in front of a camera.
So, again, just do your research. Ask someone in your drama department or if your school doesn't have one, ask at a high school about a good way to start some classes and where you might be able to find out about local auditions. Teachers are always more than willing to help out students who are interested in their field!

Best of luck!

You started really well: "I don't even know if I'm good at acting or not". That is really important, most kids think they are great -- which they aren't -- the ones who don't know are willing to learn.

The greatest actors in the world have been stage-trained -- why do you think the British have more high quality actors?

If you can do stage you can do TV/film (though they require some different skills) but if you only do TV/film you won't be able to do stage.

Get into any dramatics class that leads to doing productions, pure improv without a goal will not help you.

You have the right goal (to be a better actress) and that is worth a lot. Just do whatever you can locally, and then move to NY (not Hollywood) and really learn your trade.

Then you can get famous :-)
