I do the same exact thing. I buy all my mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow and blush from places like walgreens or rite aid...but I buy my lipgloss, moisturizers, foundations and powders from department stores. I love Mac foundations. I can't use cheap foundations because they do horrible things to my skin.
But I completely agree with you. Who the hell can tell the difference between a 5 dollar eyeliner or a 20 dollar one? Hardly anyone if you apply it correctly.
Foundations however, a cheap nasty one can be spotted from a mile away and give you too many skin problems.
Makeup trends and seasons change too often to be spending so much on every little thing.

I do more or less the same thing. I buy Smashbox foundation - it's the ONLY one that I don't need a separate concealer for! But my loose powder is Covergirl, my mascara is either Revlon or Loreal - because I consider those to be "staples". For other things like eyeliner and eye shadow, I go with the cheapy ones for the wild or special occasion colors, but the more expensive ones for the everyday ones.
I don't understand the fascination with MAC products. Okay, some of their lipsticks are cool, but their foudation made me break out.

Nothings wrong with buying Make-up a bit cheaper is there? No, all the drugstore prices have pretty good quality products. And some websites have comparisons where you can get the quality of the more expensive but it'll show you the cheaper product say, from covergirl or maybelline. Try this one: http://www.glamour.com/fashionbeauty/slideshows/2007/08/glammies?slide=3

Well, I don't buy any of it, but then that is probably a good thing. From an uneducated guys perspective, I do not see where it would make a lot of difference. Also, personal preference is ladies who where minimal makeup. A bit of highlighting to bring out your best features, but as little as possible is what I like.

It's good to avoid places like WALMART and CVS for make up - or just in general, since they treat their work force with such disrespect... I never go there! - because the quality is horrible, the make up colors aren't bold because they are cheap, and they won't last at all. Clinique, Mac, and Revlon are brands to stick with at the make up counter.
you may not want to spend 14 dollars on the eyeliner, but it's worth it- having gross smudges of black and other colors under your eyes every five minuets is really bad. that's what you get with store brand make up!

Eyes, lips, and cheeks: Black Opal is fab or maximum different drugstore manufacturers marketed for African American epidermis tones. The pigments are lots richer and colours have a lot of dad! Face: Max factor grease paint sticks are a classic, and likewise are available a lot of crimson based colours that are degree lighting fixtures friendly. Set with a straightforward translucent powder.
