I bought a car in 2005. My last payment was in January of 2006. The dealer has given me the run around since then telling me that he mailed my title, and if I never got it, then there is nothing he can do about it. Is there anything I can do legally? Or is this really just my issue that I never got it?

I used to work at a car dealership, for 5 years actually and this sounds really off (especially if they have a service area). Usually dealerships make an effort to make you feel good about a sale so that you will come back...

I would go down to the dealership with all of the information that you have for your car-they sometimes ask for random paperwork you would not have thought to bring. Also, it's important for you to let them know that you receive shotty service. If the first guy who talks to you does not help you, I would definitely ask for the sales manager, if not the owner. Let them know that they HAVE to give you YOUR title. If they give you any more heat let them know you are prepared to go above the dealership to get good service.

Chances are that you will get your title, no problem. They want to keep your business, believe me.

Just curious, but what dealership was it?

There is only one way to solve this. Go to your Department of Motor Vehicles and apply for a duplicate title. Bring along all the documentation that shows you have satisfied the lien and the car has been registered in your name since the purchase.
Sometimes, this can even be done on-line.

Don't waste any more of your time with an incompetent dealer. While you are there, register a complaint about the dealer.

Good luck.

I strongly second Lovebugbasso's response to your question. What a crap cow that dealer must be! You must have the title sooner or later because when you sell your car to an individual or another dealer it's (the title's) gotta be there!
[ You are a consumer] and I'd report them to the better business bureau in your town and copy it to a local senator and legislator. The DA's office would love to hear about it also.
