You don't have to kill to get the Elder Wand, you only have to defeat the owner of the Elder Wand. Voldemort never bothered to work that out and therefore killed the wrong person (Snape) and in the end himself as well.

First off, you don't have to kill someone for the elder wand, just defeat them, which is not necessarily the same thing, and Snape was never its master anyway, all of which Voldemort later finds out. In the sense of your question, however, I would have to say that, if Snape had defeated Dumbledore, it would have worked, becuase Nagini is a horcrux, and as such is controlled by Voldemort by the piece of his soul inside here.

You dont have to kill someone -- as seen with Draco getting it from Dumbledore and Harry from Draco -- but you do have to conquer, defeat, or disarm them. Since a part of Voldemort resided inside Nagini (since the snake was a Horcrux), Voldemort was truly conquering Snape by killing him.

Also Voldemort was quite ignorant to the facts about the Elder Wand and therefore never quite worked out its ways. That's why he killed the wrong man!

Hope this helps.

The mistake isnt Jo's..
Its voldemort..
We can all see that Voldemort, inspite of being so deep in magic ,was blissfully unaware about the Deathly Hallows!
He obviously didnt really get how the Elder Wand is inherited..
To inherit the wand , you need to DEFEAT the owner...
And killing is what suits Voldemort anyway...
So he went ahead and set Nagini upon Severus..

This is just to accentuate the blunders that the Dark Lord commits..

First, Voldie never really understood the concept of the Elder Wand.

Second, if had killed Snape with a regular Avada Kedavra, Snape could have easily ducked, blocked, whatever. If it did indeed get him, then he would have died too quickly to tell Harry everything.

Third, Voldie didn't really want to kill Snape. He did it because he thought he had to. So, he just let Nagini get him.

Well the snake has some of his soul, and he commanded it to kill Snape, so I suppose he thought that was close enough. If anything, it was another mistake by Voldemort.

Dumbledore was the owner of the elder wand he got defeated by Draco who disarmed him. It really belonged to Draco who didn't know it belonged to him. Then Harry disarmed Draco (defeating him), it passed to Harry, who didn't want it. So then if harry dies a regular death ( not getting defeated) then the wand's ability will be broken. But if harry does get deafeated then the one who deafeated him will get the elder wand it will pass on like that until someone is not deafeated then the wand looses its power.

Good question. Would the wand then belong to Nagini? (Can that even happen?)
