It is unusual for normal growth to occur after age 20. At the ends of our long bones are epiphyses, or growth plates. These usually fuse and close about the age of 16 - 18 in males and about 14 - 17 in girls, and growth ceases. In unusual cases, growth plates do not fuse and growth continues. In such instances, especially if the person grows unusually tall, the doctor may search for evidence of Marfan syndrome or a pituitary tumor.
