For the second time in 6 months, our laminate countertops have warped-are they cheap, or do we do something wrong? The company where we bought them have come out and replaced them before, and now it has happened again!

Where are they warping? If it is along an edg enext to an appliance then it could be because of heat, they should install a heat strip between the countertop and the appliance.

Are you placing things on the counter top that should not be placed there, such as hot pans or some sort of acidic fruit or liquid?

There are a lot of reasons laminate warps, and it could be that the install was not done properly (and the fact that they quickly replaced them to start with makes them look a little guilty), but it could also be because of something that the customer has done.

Laminate is not the best material for countertops, if you can afford to do it I would see if the compnay instead of replacing them again, would credit the amount of the countertops toward the pruchase of some other sort of coutertop material, stone, granite, solid surfacing or even butcher block.

Warping countertops are usually caused by moisture or heat. If the top is attached properly to the counter it shouldn't warp under normal use. The company that replaced them should have told you the reason they warped the first time. Call and ask them. I have had some really cheap laminate counters (mobile home) and had no problems.

I would think that if there is no customer abuse of the surface such as too much heat that it would be a manufacture defect. The adhesion is bad. Did they replace the counter top or just the laminate? When done correctly laminate will have at the very least 20% adhesion to the substrate. This is enough to hold the laminate firmly in place. As the adhesion % goes up so does the quality of surface. This sounds like a case of bad glueing. Either moisture, dirt/dust or poor aplication.

There are many reasons why they warp. I am assuming you have a dishwasher, if that is the case you need to have a "Backer Board" installed underneath the countertop. This prevents water from penetrating the particleboard.

Water and/or Humidity could be another factor. The more humidity in a room, the more likely a countertop will "bow" or bend. If you have a miter (an L shape) it could be that water is penetrating the seam due to improper sealing.

Is there water penetration anywhere?? Are they warping by any seams where water might be penetrating?
