In the broadest terms, the Earth's crust formed as its still molten surface cooled more than four billion years ago. Remaining heat and heat coming from the Earth's core allow for the matter beneath the solid crust to behave in a viscous manner and therefore form currents.

the Earth's surface is formed by the cooling of the core.
many years ago, in a land far away, the earth was a mini sun.
As it moved away from the Sun it cooled and the crust was formed.
It is still "forming" when lava cools.

"bottom currents" are caused by heat, ice, and the rotation of Earth. It drives the "ocean conveyor" bringing warm water north, then cold water south.
