Before 2002, the Colts and the Patriots used to be in the same division (AFC East). Even after the Colts went to the AFC South, the rivalry continued as the Patriots kept on beating the Colts in either important regular season games or in the postseason. The Colts made the rivalry even last year by beating the Patriots twice (including in the AFC Championship game).
There is also a rivalry because the games are so good. The Colts, Patriots, and Broncos have been the strong teams of the AFC in this decade, and their games against each other are very competitive.

I'm an avid Colts fan. I think the rivalry is between both fans AND players. Who knows exactly what creates sports rivalries, but I think a lot of this one started 4 or 5 years ago when the Colts simply could not get passed the Patriots. It was the Patriots that so often kept Peyton Manning from "winning the big one". I think the rivalry changed a little bit 2 years ago when the Colts were finally able to beat the Pats, but I think it's still there. And it'll hang around for a while, until the next big rivalry comes along. There was a time when the Tennessee Titans were big rivals with the Colts, but no more.

Both the Colts and the Patriots used to be in the AFC East, so they were in the same division. This led to the teams playing 2 times per year, every year, and occassionally battling for the division title. After the Colts moved divisions the rivalry only got stronger. The Pats and Colts have continued to finish first in their respective divisions meaning they play eachother every year. So you have two 12-4 or so teams playing eachother each year. Then include the playoffs. They've met twice in the AFC Championship game and 1nce in the divisional round in the past 4 years. One of these two teams have ended the others season 3/4 years. Not to mention they both have great QBs.

They two teams were good. They always met each other in the playoffs. The Colts normally played very well. They always did until they met the Pats. The Pats beat 'em up almost every year. The two teams have the best QBs in the NFL. So because they have the two best QBs and because the Colts dislike the Patriots it became a rivalry.

It is a very weak rivalry if any. The teams do not dislike eachother in the terms of rivalries such as Chiefs/Raiders, Cowboys/Redskins, Bears/Packers and so on.... Theirs is a rivalry based on competition, they usually end up being the best teams during the year and eventually in some cases, play eachother in the playoffs.

brady is so good and manning is so everybody makes it see who's better
Adam Vineteri vs. his former team. Nothing like revenge
Tony Dungy vs. Bill Belick. Two of the best
sometimes for the AFC Championship
The Fans always want to know which is better
In my opinion the AFC CHampionship game was better than the Super Bowl

They were in the same division from 1970 to 2002 and that made them automatically rivals.
Immediatly after, Manning and Brady became the 2 best QB in the league, and face each other only once instead of twice made it more interesting.
