I took my car in after after having starting issues. Was told I needed to replace the starter. Got a starter has it switched. Still same starting problem. My battery was hooked up to a charger, but it wouldn't seem to charge. While it was hooked up, car was started, and cahrger was removed... still was running. I can get my car to start if I give it a little gas... usually takes 2-3 tries. It always turns over when trying. Would this mean my battery needs to be replaced, or is this an alternator problem?

You kind of answered your own question when you said that the "battery wouldn't seem to charge" when hooked up to a charger.

As well as your battery was on its final leg, you could have your regulator checked as this could keep your alternator from charging the battery by not allowing the proper voltage and current to the battery.

I think you might have gotten taken with replacing your starter. I would take it up with whoever said it was a Starter problem and get your money back.

It sound like it coould be your fuel pump
Most car stores like Kragen or Auto Zone will test your battery or Alternator if you bring it in, they can tell you which one is having problems if either.
If the starter spins the engine with just the battery hooked up it usually has a charge.
To test you alternator at home, start your car, then disconnect the positive lead to he battery (hold it away from everything) if the alternator is bad your car will die.

You said that your battery wouldn't accept a charge. Did you have the battery checked? It may have a bad cell or you have dirty battery cable connectors.

You also mentioned that the engine will turn over, but you didn't mention if it was turning over slow or not. If the engine is turning over at a normal speed, then the battery is not your problem with the starting and it is somewhere else, possibly with the fuel system.

Alternator, if it was the battery it wouldn't rev at all...if you can take it to Autozone and run a test on it...

take your battery to autozone to do a check up, it's free, and take about 30 minutes max. if it's good, then, it's probably the alternator.
