My son's local band is starting to take off and I would like to help them. They have been playing backyard parties and have had a couple of gigs at The Wire is Upland. This month they will be playing at Castle Park in Riverside. My question is: Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help promote them for future performances?

Sure. I actually promote bands as a side job from my other two. Do they have any albums or E.P.'s out?
If so, get their press kit out there to local radio stations, colleges (they are always in need of a band for small events) and local venues.
Get some really high quality photos taken of them. That's key for a press kit. A strong bio of the band, their influences and where they have played is important for the kits.
Like I mentioned, when the kits are put together, mail or drop them off to colleges and radio stations.
Are they old enough to play bars (18+)?

Good luck

Wow. Finally a good father. It really depends how old the band is. If they're still teens, look into teen centers and city center performances. If they're young adults, look into night clubs, bars, and any performance you can find. In order to promote, if someone offers you a spot on a performance roster, DO NOT TURN THEM DOWN, the band should accept, so they don't get a reputation of turning down performances.

try posting flyers at your local pool or rec center or places people go a lot. You can also make premotion posters and hang them up in your office/place of work. Try making t-shirts or calling a radio station to see if they'll help premote the band by playing a few songs every hour or so.

Make sure they have a web site with their music on it. It is an easy way for the masses to check them out.

Also, putting on free concerts in the park. Pass out the flyers with the info of who, what, where and the fact that its FREE! Also have on the flyer the site address so people can check them out before hand. That will allow them to pass on the info to their friends. Word of mouth is the best advertizing today.

you can help by putting up flyers but its really something that the band should be doing.....My friends band goes out a week before a show and prints up an enormous amount of flyers and then goes and passes them out at malls, schools, etc. I think its better that the band does this rather than a parent

Do they have a myspace?
Myspace is popular with young people these days and it's a good way of discovering good bands.

Purevolume is good as well.

Hope this helps :]] x
