Fred Cook faked the first ascent of Denali, so it doesn't lend much to his credibility.
The only uncontested person reaching the North Pole is Roald Amundsen, who flew there in 1926. Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. Therefore, it is quite possible that he was the first person to reach both poles.

The first person to claim to have reached the Pole was Frederick Albert Cook, an American explorer who claimed that he reached it in 1908. Cook`s claim was disputed a year later when the Arctic explorer, Robert Edwin Peary, also an American, claimed to be the first person to reach the Pole.
The only evidence is their own written records.
US Congress investigated both claims, and gave the credit for first reaching the North Pole to Robert Peary. As a result of both claims, controversy arose. Peary had served with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey before becoming a civil engineer in the U.S. Navy. In contrast, although Frederick Cook had a Ph.D., his recording of his explorations was not as extensive as those of Peary.

Controversy also exists over the third claim to reach the North Pole. This claim was made by Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett who claimed to have flown over the Pole in 1926.

That's a pretty big controversy. It's being argued, and probably will be, forever.
