I think the promises I make to myself are the hardest to keep. When I make a promise to someone else, I wouldn't dream of breaking it - but I guess I don't value myself as much as I do other people. I always promise myself that I'm going to eat better, exercise more, stay focused at work, and generally take good care of myself...and that always falls to the wayside (usually by the end of the day).

As much as possible, let's NOT promise. Never borrow from the future.
Most promises get broken as they are made to be broken. Most people make promises just to soften up reservations and doubts. The aim is just to make the other party hold on into something. Most of the time, they are not workable and nothing is meant at all...which, eventually only causes frustration and resentment.
Now, to your question: "What promise is the hardest to keep?" I would say THOSE YOU MAKE FOR YOURSELF.
From time to time, in our attempts to change or straighten up or even bring to a close these so called "awful habits or appalling traits" in us, we face up to promises. "I will start doing this.", or "I won't do that anymore." And when we fail, we feel so disgusted with ourselves. Perhaps it's much better not to promise. We can just try to do our best without such flimsy binding thing that can break anytime.

Honestly, I don't make "promises" to others unless I know 100% that I can keep them. (& you CAN know!) Also, if I say I'll do something for someone, it doesn't really need a promise. Say I offer to drive someone somewhere, & I break both legs. Little things like that don't need promises. In fact, if I KNOW I'll love someone forever, they'll know it, too. The "words" just don't seem necessary. There's one promise I used to make to myself every night when I went to bed. I WILL NOT SMOKE ANY CIGARETTES TOMORROW! Can't keep it, stopped saying it. I believe that most people mean it when they make promises to another, but things do change, & then they regret having made the promise. Just wanted to add that a "secret" isn't a promise. & a secret isn't guarunteed to be a secret once told. (Unless someone's trust is absolutely earned, & then, it should never be anyone else's secret.)

Lets see there are several that comes to mind all at once: a promise to one self, a promise to not tell when somebody is getting hurt or injured either by themselves or others. A promise of always doing right, nobody is ever perfect and finally a promise that is already broken before it began.

the promise that is Hardest to keep, would be when your friend asks you how does she look with the dress she has on. I know it is not becoming to her, but I do not tell her the truth, even when she says, you promised me you would tell me the truth.

The promise others saw in you when young. Fortunately you don't have to hold yourself to it and beat yourself over the head as a failure because you didn't fulfill it. To paraphrase the song, life's what happens to you while you're dreaming other dreams. And the reality is usually every bit as good or better, if you jump into it, because it is such a surprise and adventure. As my Dad told me long ago, the trouble with dreams is they can easily turn into nightmares. But, as we agreed, you've got to have a dream, and pursue it - but never get locked into it exclusively, and if it turns sour, have the wit to dump it when appropriate, and get another. So there - from one promising young feller to another!

I don't find promises hard to keep, because I learned a long time ago from people who made them to me and broke them that one does not make a promise they can not keep. So I make very few of them and those I make are sealed with my heart and word.

"I promise you, nothing will change after we move away from each other, we'll still be really close friends!"
The problem with this is that people change over time and when you don't see people who used to be your close friends for a while both of you would have changed and will have different mind-sets. So you may not get along like you did before.
But thankfully, I have still been able to maintain a few friends who have moved away and we are still very close.

The promise not to lie. I find it the most difficult and the hardest to keep. This includes white lies and small lies.
