They assembled a roster with a collection of proven offensive players and with the exeception of a few of the younger players they just aren't hitting consistently. In April, May and even into June we explained it away as a slow start, but its August now and still nothing from the heart of the offense, Wells, Glaus, Thomas, Overbay... As a Jays fan, this has been an incredibly frustrating year. The group of Wells-Glaus-Thomas looks good on paper, but they have been playing poorly and with absolutely no consistency. I agree about the pitching - you couldn't ask for more out of Mcgowan and Litsch, but they've been let down in the late innings on several innings.
I think the starting rotation for next year, assuming no deals are made involving our starters, looks good. Halladay has returned somewhat to form, Burnett is excellent when healthy, and McGowan could be an impressive third starter. The biggest hole in that rotation, for the second straight year, is Josh Towers. He shows flashes of brilliance, but I have to hold my breath every time he pitches.
I'd like to see us sign a shortstop who can hit during the offseason, to upgrade from McDonald-Clayton, as well as a catcher. I know Zaun is a good leader, but you can't have a .317 OBP from your catching position in this division. Hopefully Adam Lind can develop into a full-time player next season, too - if I had to dump an outfielder, it would be the overrated Reed Johnson.
Finally, I think a managerial change is necessary. Even with our injuries and inconsistencies, this team should not be struggling to keep at the .500 mark in August. Gibbons has been given many chances, and he hasn't done anything with them. He's a poor game strategist, especially when it comes to his pitching decisions, and it's time to show him the door. This season is a wash, but I hope we can at least build a winning foundation for next year.

One of the problems the Jays have is that many American born players don't want to play in Canada and live in the United States. In addition, Jays management keeps a close eye on the dollars and they just are not able to take that next step to be a consistent contender. They have come up with some good teams in the past but it doesn't look like they will get there this year.

The Blue Jays are unfortunate to be in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox. Halladay is having a bad year (by his standards), Burnett has been out on the DL, and their closer has been on the DL for months. Pitching wins championships, and right now they are hurting in that area (compared to the rest of the good teams in the AL)

I think they should follow the Expo's lead ;)
Their Offense is great, They need to trade a big bat for a solid starter. If not, you can never expect them to catch the Yankees or Red Sox.
