Is Carlos Zambrano a legitimate contender for the Cy Young?

Does anyone know of any Cy Young winners who were not in the All-Star Game the year that they won? (modern day)

Which winner had the biggest second-half push?

If the Cubs continue to play the way they are playing and Zambrano keeps pitching the way he is, its wrapped up. But, Penny's been great, Peavy has fantastic stuff, and if Young comes back quick he's a threat as well. Also, don't count out John Smoltz, the braves are looking good after the trade deadline and he's got 10 wins and a better Era than big Z.
theres about 10+ starts left for all these guys so I would say its a toss up. As for your 2nd question, I have no idea....
But I think Santana probably has had the biggest 2nd half pushes of anyone during his Cy Young years, "The reigning AL Cy Young winner is a staggering 41-4 with a Major League-leading 427 strikeouts in games played after the All-Star break since 2003." - USA Today

While most claim that Zambrano is the front runner due to his amazing turn around since the Michael Barrett departure, the fact remains that Jake Peavy boasts a 10-5 record with the 2nd best ERA in the MLB and is No. 4 on the strike out leader list. While Zambrano does have 4 more wins, he also has 2 more L's in the loss column and an ERA well over (3.47 to be exact). As a die hard Cubs fan, I'd love the thought of him winning the Cy Young but the competition is stiff, not to mention winning a Cy Young may be a bad thing for the Cubs if they look to negotiate with Zambrano in the off season. Winning a Cy Young only ups the asking price, and with new ownership coming soon, who knows what will happen!

Personally i think Zambrano needs to cut down his era by about half a point if he wants the Cy Young award, but he definetly has a chance.Another person i think that is a long shot to win is Tim Hudson,i mean really if u look at it he would be 14-5 with a era. about .30 lower if Bob Wickman could save a game and not let every single inherated runner score.

Right now Zambrano and Penny are the frontrunners for the Cy Young Award.

Penny and Zambrona are the clear favorites. It all depends on if the Cubs make the playoffs or not. Zambrona is dominating but not as much as Penny.

There is no question he is, and I would not be surprised if he won it this year.
