Hello there, my girl friend owns a small shop and she was robbed quite recently and the man said he had a gun and would shoot her if she called the police. Is there anyway of getting a firearms licence in the UK just for protection and how do you get one? thanks a lot.

By the way, it turned out the guy did not have a gun, but still, it would be useful to have as protection.

the only way you can get a firearms licence in the Uk is by being a member of a gun club and also being able to prove you are a bona fide member. and a lot of paperwork

Money, a clean record and a free weekend. Yes it is but the 2nd has been heavily attacked and restricted since at least the 1960's. A lot of progress has been made but when it comes to carry there are no federal laws on it. Every state it is a matter of state law. And states are still able to govern themselves. So of course there would be restrictions placed by the states. Some worse than others. 38 states allow some form of open carry. 48 states allow concealed carry and we have been going after those 2. Arizona now allows carry concealed without a permit. And Tennessee may be the next. Don't expect something like this to change quickly. No one said this would be easy or quick. The anti's have done what has been done over the course of 40 years. Things like this take time.

It is possible to get a firearms licence in the UK but you have to be at least 17 years old i cant remember the website but I'm sure you will find it if you search for it in the web and your more likely to get a licence if you live in the country side and you have private land but you cant use it for protection

The UK has very strict firearms laws. All handguns not to mention automatic weapons are banned. Even the British olympic pistol shooting team aren't allowed to own hand guns, and have to train outside the country.

To own a shotgun you have to have a "genuine reason" (i.e. for work or for pheasant shooting etc) to own one - SELF DEFENSE IS NOT A REASON, and you will not be granted a liscence for it.

Essentially as far as the law goes, it is illegal to own a gun for protection.

there is no way to get a firearms license for "protection".
you could get a licence for sport or farming but if you were discovered to have produced the weapon during a robbery the police would prosecute YOU.

if you were known to have a firearm in the shop it would be likely to make you a target for a more serious type of robber, who would want to steal your gun.

No and I would never recommend you have one for protection. before you know it the gun could be turned on you or you will face charges of having a weapon and using it. I would take up some form of self defence.
