Prisons are overcrowded, under staffed, and getting sued for substandard care. Quit getting your information from prison movies and TV shows.

Very few prisons are anywhere near that cushy--the only examples I can think of is "white collar" prisons for non-violent offenders. Most prisoners can only watch a little TV in a common room, and can only work out in the yard. As for three meals a day--that has to do with HUMAN rights. The punishment of prison is supposed to be that you are denied your freedom. Just let someone have your car for the weekend, and stay home without being able to go out, and see how fun THAT is after the first day or so.
I do agree that prisons need reforming. But the main reformation is that they need to be made safer for the prisoners (just because someone has committed a crime doesn't mean s/he should be beaten or raped--again with those pesky human rights), and so that the prisoners have a chance at rehabilitation, instead of just learnig how to be a better criminal.

Everytime I see a question like this one, I have to answer. I have been to prison for 20 months in Okla-coma a couple of years back. How do you get these ideas that prison is so called "cushy?" They are not. Although, the Fed., prisons are better than the state prisons. Men get more things than the women's prisons get. I pulled weeds for eight hours a day in the summer heat, with long pants two shirts and socks and shoes. In Oklahoma, the tempature is always way over a 100 degrees. I worked like a dog. And the food, Oh my! Stamped on the box - for Inmate consumption only, and it was gross food. A lot of starch, I mean a lot! Homosexual activity was every where and the noise was always hard to deal with. I didn't get to have a TV, No AC in the dorms, 120 women of all ages and all colors and were in there for different things, all the way from murder to writing hot checks. Now, the max., prisons in Oklahoma have cable in each cell, but these women are only let out one hour a day from their cell. Waiting to eat was an ordeal in it's self. 750 women in line to eat, get mail, get medication. Always, a long line for anything. Fights and people screaming at each other. And if you are going to think for a nano second that prisons are to "cushy," you don't know what you are talking about. I was in for forgery. Do you think I will ever, ever do that again not on your life. It was the biggest mistake of my life. And being a convicted felon will always be with me for the rest of my life. I regret every thing that I did and have total remorse. We didn't have excercise equipment, but the men did. In Okla-coma, if you didn't have a high school diploma, you were required to get a GED while incarcerated. Help.... was no where in sight. They don't have enough employees to counsel each prisoner. Had to make it on your own. It was just warehousing people, not helping them. Not one bit. It is not a place you want to visit. It was just horrible. And that is all I have to say..... Good day.

Prisons today is just another vacation destination unless you happen to be in one of the few "maximum facility". These are a little rougher on the boys.
While in prison, these people should lose any rights that they have except of course fair trial and punishment to fit the crime. basic food, basic accomodations and if they have TV, limit the channel to religious programming.
It has been said that the prisoners have to be kept busy so they don't get into further trouble, there is an easy solution: put them to work, GOD knows the country needs all kinds of infrastructure work .
If the welfare recipient can be ask to do some community work, why not make these "boys" earn their keep while in prison.
Why should we as honest citizen have to pay because someone robs a bank for example.
The robber is provided with a lawyer if he can't afford one, is given accomodations, clothes on his back, three meals a day, medical care, sports and rec facility the likes of which many of us honest citizen can't afford, TV etc....
Add to that, early parole, time off for good behavior and other little perks like the possibility to learn a trade or improve your education. Furthermore, when you come out, there is a very good probability, they will find you a job too.
Maybe working is all wrong, I should break the law and get it all too.

I hope you will do some research and educate yourself about the horrors of our "modern" monolithic institutions. They have deteriorated in the last thirty years while politicians wanted to be seen as being tough on crime. That turned out to be dumb on crime and made us less safe and cost us a lot of money unnecessarily.
Consider what the governor of California may be hiding from the public when he keeps rejecting access to inmates by the media. From treatment in insane asylums decades ago we should have learned not to trust institutions to do the right thing when there is little oversight from the public.

Have you ever been to prison? Beatings, stabbings and rapes are commonplace in prison. Do you REALLY think a T.V. and a gym compensate for the complete loss of freedom and daily threats to your personal safety? I suggest you spend a week as a prisoner yourself before you make the ridiculous assertion that people don't mind (or even enjoy) being there. People commit crimes not becasue they do not fear the punishment they will incur, but because they do not expect to get caught.

I don't know that you can "make people feel bad" for what they have done. But, no, I see no reason for any TVs in prisons. Prisoners in our country have it way better than many law-abiding people in the rest of the world.
For shorter-term sentences, I think education/ learning a trade/ rehabilitation is important. Otherwise, they're just biding their time til they get out and commit more crimes. Heavy community service should fill their days also. There's no reason for any litter on any highway, since we have so many able bodies sitting in prisons who could be picking it up.
For long-term serious offenders... I don't know why we even give them beds. If you've seriously hurt or killed someone, why should you enjoy the comfort of a mattress, warmth of a blanket, or enjoy hot food? This is a mystery to me.

I think prison is a great place to retire seeing that I have no retirement and no medical care. I know I would have a better life there then I would outside. I know in there I would always have an officer around to protect me if needed. In the outside world if anything happens I have to call 911 if I am lucky and then wait til they get a chance to get there. In prison I have more space then what I have at work in which I work at a little cubicle all day. In prison they have television and coffee. At work I have computer monitor that I have to watch all and I have to ask permission to get water which will ruin my productivity. Work will not bury me for free when I die in prison I know I will be buried for free in a potters grave.
At work i can not afford insurance to in order to get my medication that I need. In prison I would not have to worry because It would be free. In prison I know I could get hurt, but in this free world I can get hurt at anytime and I am lucky if there are any police around at all.

unless they're getting channels that i've never seen, having a tv in your cell probably makes it worse.
