Some of the red stuff from inside the thermometer my have gotten in to the water. Are the fish going to die? What is the red stuff anyway? Is it going to poison me when I stick my hand in the water?

Research before you answer people!

The red stuff in the thermometer is not mercury, it's dyed alcohol and will not hurt a thing in your tank. The only risk is a cut on your finger getting up the glass.

FYI, Mercury is no longer used in any thermometers and has been replaced with a nontoxic blend of other metals. No thermometer made since the 70's contains anything harmful.

No, it will be fine. It's just alcohol and will evaporate in a jiffy. However, you need to get any glass out of your aquarium as it may hurt your fish. I suggest you wear rubber gloves while doing this to prevent getting cut. If there are no visible pieces, you may want to do a quick vacuum over the floor of the tank with a gravel vac. This is not essential, but it's just in case any of your fish swallow a tiny piece of glass or something.

It wont hurt you...but it may hurt the fish. I suggest draining some of the tank water and putting in some fresh water. Also, talking to your local aquarium store might be helpful.
