Despite being on a lake with several floating decks, absolutely no one local, (owners, marine shop, handymen) can tell me how to acquire plastic 55 gallon drums. Any thoughts? This is a relatively inexpensive item, typically recycled, but large, so I fear shipping costs would be ten times the price of the barrels themselves.

Call around to the local manufacturing companies and ask to speak with the Head of Maintenance. Most factories will have 55 gallon drums, both metal and plastic sitting everywhere. A lot of times they will give you the plastic barrels and some times the metal barrels also but most times as not the metal barrels will have to be sent back to the company because there is a deposit. Factories that have a steam boiler are the best places because they recieve boiler chemicals in plastic barrels.

Are there Dairy Farms nearby? If yes, they use Udder Lubricant stored in the plastic 55 gallon barrels. Are there orchards or fruit packing plants? If yes, they use Solvents and Detergents stored in the plastic 55 gallon barrels. Other industries may use them as suggested by other people, but be aware of the dangers of cleaning out the chemicals stored in the barrels. I would suggest getting a hold of a MSDS book to protect yourself.

Ace Hardware in our area sells fifteen gallon heavy plastic barrels. I and my dad made a pontoon out of these years ago they work well. A 55 gallon barrel may work but, you may have to have a lot of weight on it to make if buoyant and be able to carry weight evenly.
A barrel this big might just flip over with weight on top, being top heavy. Just an idea.

Check with several newspaper plants, they sometimes use products in these barrels and the cost to ship them back for reuse is to high. This may be a cheaper way to get them.
