I think it was 6 old English pence per week. I seem to remember buying 1 penny sherbets with it. You couldn't get much else as we had rationing until, I think, 1953.

I was given 25 cents a week, if I cleaned part of the house, and did my share of the dishes, sweeping, and cleaning up the dinner table. Otherwise, I got squat. When really little, I spent it on perfume, but not for the perfume, but for the tiny pretty colored bottles. Later, I liked to spend my money on those candy cigarettes that came in a candy cigarette box (my parents hated those) and I bought those tiny plastic coke shaped bottles you could chew on and they had cola flavors. I also saved my money to buy b-day presents for my family, and x-mas presents, and mothers and fathers day presents.

50p a week, which sounds mean but it was a good amount back in the mists of time.

I spent it on all sorts of things, Misty comics, records (singles usually, vinyl ones if you remember those), toys like jacks and of course sweets.
I was never much of a saver.

Edit:
Hey Brain_child! It wasn't that long ago, lol.

Never had an allowance, had to do chores for money. We would go to the butcher shop and buy rancid meat. This meat became shark bait. Sharks would be sold to lobstermen for more money than we paid. We could then buy twinkies, pepsie cola, more rancid meat and ammunition to shoot sharks. This cycle doesn't work anymore. Too bad, I miss those days.

$5 - and I would spend it on lunch off campus with friends.

Needless to say that money only lasted a whole day.

Allowance? Ha ha ha! That is pretty funny. Aw, man. I wish.

Anyhoo, care to enlighten us on what this has to do with gender and women's studies?
