I think there would be a lot less stress and fear if we didn't read newspapers and watch news stations. i think that fear is shoved in our faces everyday from the media. Granted its good to be kept informed but sometimes enough is enough! Besides, if it were super important they would interrupt your favorite tv program to tell you. But yes, i think we would live a better life. a lot less therapy!

We'd probably have a better life. If you return to the times before the 1960s, the majority of people had neither a telephone or a TV. Therefore, communication was slow. As local newspapers couldn't obtain non-local news quickly, they had to rely on local news. This allowed for local newspapers to print loads of good, happy news. If the timing was right, a local wedding would make a front page. As people read mainly good news, it was a good influence. Any crime that was reported was debated in the local communities and that (usually) petty criminal would have been shamed. As communications have become the norm for the majority of people, local news is no longer important unless somebody dies or it's a major scandal. Local newspapers now cover their pages with National news. As the Nationals like to publish disasters, murders, robberies, drugs etc. it has become accepted by today's youths that these incidents are the norm and many are therefore influenced by the nasty world that we live in. However, just removing the Newspapers wouldn't have an impact. TV, radio and the Internet would have to be shut down as well. The Chinese attempts at censoring Internet usage in China was correct as the Chinese leaders had declared that the Internet is corrupting the Chinese people. This is true! Whilst China was closed to the world, the Chinese believed in living unselfishly and were not materialistic. Since opening their doors to the world, the Chinese are fast becoming selfish and greedy. They want everything that they can possibly get. This reminds me of when Mrs Thatcher became Prime Minister and formed relations with the US. The UK went from a Law abiding, hard working, unselfish country to a greedy, selfish, couldn't care less and lazy country. The Chinese are the latest victims of this. Amnesty may think they have done the Chinese a favour by pressuring the Chinese Government etc. to remove the censorship but in effect, they have seriously harmed the Chinese and been part of the cause of mass destruction of this planet. By fighting for the so called "freedom", they have given the Chinese the need to destroy every tree, dig up every stone, eat everything that is edible and burn everything that burns. That is the world that has been created through mass media and instant communications (and Amnesty).

I used to begin the day by reading a morning paper over breakfast, and I'd be depressed all day. I just stopped buying newspapers and watching news on TV. Dad used to watch news all day whenever it was on and find something to cause worry. He and his mother loved to worry and to make everyone around them worry. I am different. I may buy a Friday paper to see what new movies are opening. I read the movie section and discard the rest. I watch TV news only to see weather forecasts. Here in SF, there is little variation all year, so I look only for weather across the USA when I travel. I live much better without hearing a barrage of sensationalistic and pessimistic stuff and political propoganda.

I haven't read newspapers or listened to news reports for near twenty years and I am still alive and kicking. No, not even 9/11, though some things get talked about and it is nearly impossible not to catch bits and pieces here and there.
What good would it do me to become addicted to all the negative stuff about the president or the earthquake, or the hurricane, or the flood, etc. etc. Show me what I missed out on that was supposed to be necessary. Cheers!

The heart of your question is what the media company CEOs' are hoping for. Every media provider wants your money and or for you to watch their version of the news. It's just a consumer product like anything else. If you stopped watching cartoons it would have the same impact as not watching or reading the news, nothing.

I think we will die whether we read the news or not. Unless,, we find a elixir to live forever...then we might want to read the news and everything else for not having anything better to do with ourselves.
