pre book Alcatraz @ www.alcatrazcruises.com try getting an early tour and you get ages to explore the island, the night tour can be very cold. Hop on a cable car early also to avoid the hour long queues. Check out lombard st its weird

Pre-book, definitely. I've tried to go twice by walking up to the kiosk at 10 a.m. or so and they're already sold out. And definitely take a hoodie, when you're out in the bay the wind can be quite cold.
I've taken the ferry from Vallejo a few times, and the morning winds can knock you over when you're on deck.

Pre book it or you wont get to go. We did and you just pick up your tickets at Pier 39. Remember to take warm clothes, we had to buy fleeces in September in San Francisco. It was so cold and foggy, even when the fog cleared it wasn't warm enough to go without a jacket.

Yes, this does sell out quickly, especially during the tourist season and weekends. October would be less crowded, but play it safe and pre-book so you can get your choice of departure times.
Be sure to get the audio tour, it's very enlightening and entertaining.

I think you get the point, but just a side note to Mina's answer: Do come prepared for cold weather because it's cold here even in the summer, but for a week or so in October (99% of the time) it's pretty balmy, the only time of the year it gets in the 90s.

Fleet weekis usually the seconda week in themonth of October. So the things in and around Fisherman's Wharf area get pretty busy and sold out. So book now!

It may not be possible to get tickets same day, but a few days in advance is fine. Make sure to go on a Night Tour. It's the best!
